They will also learn how to cook different forms of healthy eating, dig deep into science activities and conduct experiments in caring for plants and insects. They will also get to experience local attractions such as COSI or the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium.
Does it cost anything to sign up?
A refundable $25 fee is required to hold your child’s place. Discounts are available for multiple children in the same household. Children must reside or go to school on the Hilltop or in Franklinton.
When does Summer Camp take place?
Summer Garden Camp takes place during the months of June and July. Each week will run from Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Weeks offered in 2024:
June 3rd - 7th
June 10th - 14th
June 24th - 28th
July 8th - 12th
Where does Summer Camp take place?
It takes place at Highland Youth Garden which is located at 67 S Highland Ave, Columbus OH right across the street from Highland Elementary School. On rainy days we use the High Tunnel located at the garden or the Garden House which is located at 106 S Wheatland Ave. We also use the Hilltop United Methodist Church’s grassy lawn for play and the natural playground across the street from Garden house.
Do I need to pack a lunch? How should they dress?
Children will be provided a healthy lunch option that will include produce that they help grow and harvest from the garden. If your child is a picky eater, we recommend sending a backup option, but we will do our best to encourage them to try new things!
Kids should dress comfortably for the weather in clothes that are appropriate for getting dirty. Closed toed shoes are best in the garden. We will have bug spray and sunscreen on hand. They will get their own HYG tshirt to wear on Friday’s field trip!
Who are your Camp Counselors?
HYG has a roster of five full time, year round permanent staff members who will be onsite during all days of camp. We also have seasonal staff who will join the summer teaching team along with additional volunteers and interns. Campers will be directly supervised at all times by a minimum of two staffers, but significantly more staff, interns and trusted volunteers will be onsite at most times throughout the summer, ready to lend a hand. We all love working with diverse children, are enthusiastic about nature and gardening, and we all know know our way around a healthy kitchen. All of our staff are first aid certified and background checked. Some are fluent in Spanish. For some of the weeks this summer, our campers will have the opportunity to get to know our amazing Green Teens. There are a lot of supportive mentors and role models at Highland Youth Garden!
Are there pick up and drop off services?
We currently do not have pick up and drop off services to homes. If living close enough, students may walk to the garden. When requested, if a student attends J Ashburn Boys & Girls Club, garden educators may walk students to the center after camp is over. Otherwise they need to be picked up and dropped off by a parent/guardian/person on the pick up list.
